The Supercoppa Italiana
The Supercoppa is a traditional pre-season football play-off that is held before the main Italian football season begins each year. The winners of the previous season's Serie A and Coppa Italia leagues compete for the 'super cup', usually at the home of the Serie A champions. Where a team has won both the Serie A and Coppa Italia, the runner's up from the Coppa Italia contest the cup with the Serie A winner.
Supercoppa Champs
A C Milan currently hold the record for the most number of Supercoppa Italiana wins. In the last Supercoppa final, held in August in Beijing, Inter Milan were beaten by Coppa Italia winners, S.S Lazio in a 2-1 defeat. The contest for the cup in the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing was only the fourth time it has been played on foreign soil since the competition first began in 1988. The Supercoppa is a consistently nail-biting contest to watch, particularly if you have a bet riding on it, as competition amongst the Italian teams is fierce. This often yields some fantastic footballing moments and a fair bit of controversy along the way. This year's cup was no different, Inter went in as strong favourites yet President Lotito's mid-week media claim that Lazio would win with 'heart' alone was proved correct as the action exploded through the competition.
